OTTAWA – The Royal Canadian Mint has released a $1,200 limited edition coin commemorating the royal tour, which is set to begin Thursday.
The gold and crystal coin bears the likeness of Prince William and his wife Kate, who will spend nine days touring Ottawa, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, the Northwest Territories and Alberta. Only 2,000 of the 22-karat gold coins are being produced.

Each coin has a $200 face value and costs $1,199.95. A silver coin with a sapphire-coloured crystal featuring the same design was released in April to commemorate William and Kate’s wedding. The mint’s entire run of those coins — all 25,000 — has already sold out.

I don’t too many people would be salivating at the idea of two slices of bread surrounding a filling of another slice of breadsprinkled with salt and pepper and a dash of butter but this is what it is; A Toast Sandwich.

Also known as the ‘austerity sandwich’ – contains 330 calories which British scientists claimed as the cheapest lunch in Britain and a genuine hitthe population.
The recipe, was the brainchild of renowned Victorian food writer Mrs Beeton in 1861 who devised it for when time’s were though.

Mrs Beeton Victorian Entrepreneur Inventor of the Toast Sandwich

It cost only seven and a half cents to make each one and the the Royal Society of Chemistry’s claims it at the most economical lunch in the world. They are offering a £200 to the first person who can come up with a cheaper, but still edible option.

OTTAWA – It took Canadians a while to get used to having loonies and toonies weighing down pockets and purses, but now they might have to get used to a $5 coin.
In documents obtained by CanWest News Service, the federal government has studied the introduction of a new $5 coin to replace the bill. The Bank of Canada prepared an “optimal denomination structure” report in 2005 and as part of it, used two different theoretical financial models to analyze our coin and bank note system.
One model, called the D-metric, concluded that by 2005 the elimination of the penny was warranted and recommended the introduction of a $5 coin and a $200 bill sometime between 2005 and 2021. Another model, called Boeschoten, concluded that a $5 coin would be needed between 2009 and 2020 “given the price level and other factors would be consistent with the historical shift from notes to coins at other denominations.”

“We aren’t far off [a $5 coin],” Francois Dupuis, vice-president and chief economist for economic studies with the Desjardins banking group, said in a recent interview. “Maybe in three to eight years. We will be talking a lot about this in the coming years, but I don’t think we are there just yet.” But Mr. Dupuis said the federal government needs a coinage strategy because the country can’t have too many coins.
“In Canada we have really reached a point where we have to think about what kind of coin system we want to have,” he added. “The debate has been started with the [elimination of the] penny. Maybe it will all happen at the same time.”

A fun, cheap and always cool souvenir idea is to collect squished coins? That’s right…squished pennies. Now, there are many ways of accomplishing this but one of the ways I prefer is to find a penny-pressing machine in a tourist shop. Nothing is cooler than seeing the look unto your kids face after hand-cranking the wheel which will then flattened the copper material stamped with an image of the town or place we are visiting.

We even have a small holder in which we place all the coins we have accumulated along the years, from all over Canada and the US. By the way, it is perfectly legal to press pennies in North America, but you just can’t use them as legal tender afterwards. So here you go, next time you are out on the town look out for one those press…it’s an activity you and your kids will enjoy greatly.
